There are a few different reasons why you might need a gingivectomy, more commonly called crown lengthening. This treatment involved re-contouring the gum line and can be done to treat a number of things from gum disease to purely cosmetic reasons.
Gingivitis, or gum disease, if left to its own devices, can create pockets in your gums where bacteria that irritates your gums and reduces your bone can flourish in. Gum reshaping can reduce the pockets, making it easier to clean your teeth and treat the gingivitis.
You might want crown lengthening for cosmetic reasons as well. Sometimes the gumline is higher on the teeth than looks good, making a “gummy” smile. Crown lengthening can change the gumline, revealing more of the teeth to improve their appearance.
Occasionally a restoration service will require a bit of gum reshaping. Sometimes the gums block access to the teeth that need restoration, so in those cases our dentist will remove some of the gums so he can access the teeth in question.
Whatever reason you need a gingivectomy for, OC Advanced Periodontics can help. To learn more, or to schedule your appointment with Dr. Patrick L. Huston, DDS, MSD, please call us in Tustin, California, today.
