Would you brush your teeth more carefully if you knew it would shield you from heart disease? Would you floss more carefully if you knew that it would defend you from kidney failure? Think it or not, there is some evidence that periodontal disease affects the remainder of your body outside of your mouth, including lots of the vital organs. Keep reading to find out what this might mean for you and your loved ones.
While there have been some studies suggesting a link between the health of your oral cavity and the health of the remainder of your body, please take note that these studies are ongoing and that the dental professional community has not come to an agreement on their merit. However, their implications, if true, are far-reaching. No longer would brushing your pearly whites affect only your mouth – it would also affect your organ systems and your overall bodily health. The studies find that the two biggest links that can be traced to dental health are diabetes and stroke. The best course of action is to practice good dental hygiene, regardless of whether the studies are correct. That means brushing your teeth two times a day, flossing at least once a day and visiting our office for your usual biannual checkup.
