You’ve probably heard of gum disease, and you may even know what you should do to prevent the problem. For instance, you probably know that if you keep up your oral care, you’ll be much more likely to avoid gum disease altogether. However, as you probably know, gum disease can lead to a number of serious issues.
Fortunately, if you do have gum disease, there are a few things you can still do. For example, depending on the severity of your case, our dentist could simply recommend better at-home cleanings. Similarly, we may recommend using taking medications, if your case is severe enough.
However, another option you may need to consider is gingival surgery, which is sometimes known as gum grafting. Though this treatment is rare, it can be useful if you infections and bacteria have damaged your gums.
During gingival surgery, a dentist will essentially replace unhealthy gums with healthier gums. Please note that you will probably need pain medication after this treatment. Similarly, you’ll need to keep your mouth as clean as possible if this is the option you choose.
Fortunately, gum grafting is very rare and if you have gum disease, you probably won’t need this treatment. Again, please remember that gum disease can be avoided if you brush and floss regularly, and can be caught early if you have regular dental checkups. Our periodontists, Dr. Huston and Dr. Christen, and our team will examine your gums and give you the care you need. To schedule an appointment with us, please call OC Advanced Periodontics at 714-795-3117. We look forward to hearing from you.
